We offer morning and afternoon classes on every weekday. The morning classes are 9:00 AM to 12:30 PM, and the afternoon classes are 1:20 PM to 4:50 PM. Your course and class will be decided based on your Japanese language proficiency. The number of students in a class is typically 15 – 20, of various nationalities and cultural backgrounds. Students study for passing the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) and Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU) for pursuing further study or for career purposes.

UJS recognizes classroom learning is not the only way to learn a language and assists students to experience modern and traditional Japanese culture in a variety of ways. It helps students to experience modern and traditional Japanese culture in nearby central Tokyo through the many festivals and events. It also arranges annual school field trips to further student knowledge of language and Japanese culture and customs. UJS also conducts speech contests for students to put their language skills to use.

Tokyo is Japan’s largest city with over 13 million people. Roppongi is a center for IT, finance and international trade. Surrounded by Roppongi Hills, Tokyo Midtown and The Modern Urban Village, Roppongi is a place of one of driving the economic activity in Asia.

The temperature during summer typically ranges from 25°C to 32°C (77°F to 89.6°F) but occasionally reaches 40°C (104°F). The temperature in winter ranges between 0°C and 10°C (32°F and 50°F), and the difference in temperature between summer and winter can be over 20°C. Summer in Japan is very humid, and you will need short-sleeves, lightweight clothes, sandals, hats and similar. In some winters it does not snow in Tokyo, but in other winters it may snow a few times. You might need thick, long-sleeve shirts, jackets, coats, scarves, gloves and other winter necessities.

The monthly rent for a typical one-room apartment or condominium in Tokyo ranges from 60,000 to 120,000 yen. Many students share apartments. In Roppongi, one-room apartments cost 60,000 to 150,000 yen per month.  A guarantor is usually required except for some monthly apartments with rent by the month.  Alternatively, some students stay in a guesthouse. UJS can refer you to our partner real estate agencies if you like.

If you have a permit for engaging in activities other than your main reasons for stay in Japan, you can work up to 28 hours per week. You need to obtain the permit from the immigration office at Narita or Haneda Airports or Tokyo immigration office before starting a part-time work.
The hourly rate of pay is typically from 1000 yen to 1200 yen per hour.
Students tend to work at restaurants, convenience stores, hamburger shops, gyudonya, and so on.

Please inform the administration staff immediately if you feel sick or get injured.
If you go to see a doctor in Japan, you are required to pay for 30% of the bill with Japan’s national health insurance cover. However, UJS has its students insured for overseas students’ medical insurance in addition to that, and this 30% will be reimbursed by this insurance in most cases, meaning no medical expenses apart from some exceptions.

Japan is generally safe, but it is possible to get involved in an unforeseen crime.
You need to pay attention to your surroundings and protect yourself from unpleasant and harmful situations.
In the event a problem happens, please inform the school as soon as possible.
You also need to be cautious about conduct that does not follow Japan’s laws and ordinances.
