Course Outline

Long-term study abroad courses are suitable for learners who aim for higher education or a career in Japanese. The course starts at an elementary level, with a focus on speaking, listening, reading and writing, and continues on to an advanced level. Students are able to enroll in April, July, October and January. The length of study periods depends on admission periods. Classes are adapted to suit the needs of the students and cover topics including preparation for the JLPT (Often a requirement for Japanese Universities and College). Many companies also look at JLPT scores when hiring non-Japanese employees. Furthermore, UJS offers support for career development as well as assistance for living in Japan.

Curriculum

Four types of curriculum are available according to the entrance period (April / July / October / January). You will be put into a class at a suitable level. There are 50 days in a semester (3months), and hold-back or advancement is determined by your score in the term-end examination. 

Study Topics

Learning Japanese pronunciation
Reading and writing hiragana and katakana
Reading and writing kanji
Learning basic verbs, adjectives and nouns
Greetings and basic sentence structure practice

N4 – N3 Level

Target Level

  • Be able to make everyday conversations with Japanese without major difficulties
  • Be able to differentiate speech sounds in Japanese
  • Be able to pronounce and read Japanese speech sounds, words and short sentences

Study Topics

Practicing using sentence structure and verbs learned in the beginner course and applying polite language.
Learning sentence structure and vocabularies needed for the intermediate course
Exercises in reading longer sentences
Exercises in communicating one’s opinions and intent

N4 – N3 Level

Target Level

  • Be able to extract the gist of conversations containing unlearned words and expressions
  • Be able to establish mutual understanding with Japanese outside of the school
  • Be able to use polite expression

Study Topics

Practicing sentence structure and expression for conversation
Learning and organizing vocabularies in kanji, adverbs and idioms
Exercises in reading comprehension of long sentences
Practicing listening and reading comprehension leading to skills needed for listening lectures
Preparing for ability test level N1 and N2 and study abroad exams

N2 Level

Target Level

  • Be able to understand most conversations by Japanese
  • Be able to speak fluently o various topics
  • Be able to read quickly and read and write meaningful sentences.

Study Topics

Discussing various issues (Japanese culture, events and current topics)
Learning technical Japanese and acquiring skills needed for conducting research
Writing articles and reports on a theme
Practicing conversations that can be used in business situations

  • Acquire better reading comprehension abilities and sentence composition skills
  • Advance education by touching upon Japanese culture, literature, history and society
  • Develop the ability to make use of logical thinking and comprehension abilities that are required at universities, technical schools and companies
